Home to The Juliard School, the New York City Ballet, The Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic among other institutions, the Lincoln Center has a tall bill to live up to as a venue. In recognition of this responsibility the Center has been undergoing a transformation, much of which is due to complete later this year in time for its 50th anniversary celebrations.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro in association with FXFOWLE Architects have been in charge of the design for the now complete Alice Tully Hall which forms part of the West 65th Street Project element to the renovations. WAN’s roving photographer Wade Zimmerman has provided us with these first images of the completed building ahead of the opening celebrations on Sunday 22 February.

Taking the original 1960's design and integrating modern design elements the new building is designed to integrate the site with the surrounding cityscape. The structure commands its space, reaching into the public domain with a cantilevered corner which overhangs a public plinth turned inwards to cradle the users. Transparency from street level is created with a glazed wall with views into the innards of the building where the Starr Theatre and foyer space can be seen.

The Lincoln Center said: “The West 65th Street design will open up Lincoln Center to encourage the interaction of thousands of visitors and more than 5,000 artists, teachers, and students who work and practice every day in the 81 practice and 80 rehearsal rooms, 13 dance studios, and 13 stages and concert halls that border West 65th Street.”
