King’s Mill Acute Hospital, Mansfield, United Kingdom

Unique design for new Nottinghamshire hospital
SHCA have fused clinical design and new models of healthcare with architectural design to produce this £320m Central Nottinghamshire PFI hospitals scheme. Work includes an extensive re-development of the existing facility to create a single unified hospital comprising of 28 new wards – 50% in single rooms and a new state-of-the-art Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, a new Emergency Care and Assessment Centre with an out of hours GP service and a dedicated Women & Children’s Centre.

Three T-shaped ward blocks, linked together over five floors will rise above the uniquely designed Diagnostic & Treatment and Women & Children’s Centres, all of which will enjoy a southerly aspect providing light and airy accommodation with views of the reservoir and countryside beyond.

Architecturally, the project creates a major civic presence for the area, in tune with the latest thinking on healthcare planning. The design is dedicated to the wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff.

A major objective of the Trust’s design vision was to ‘"contribute to the health & well being of the local community’’. This has been achieved through the new clinical design which focuses on the quality of the Patient & Staff experience. This design delivers an efficient clinical model where a notable 90% of the clinical adjacencies are met, along with a patient comfort-focus which maximises patient views of nature, natural daylight and natural ventilation, and which reduces noise and enhances privacy. The design is entirely in line with current Evidence Based Design guidelines.source: www.worldarchitecturenews.com
