Richard Rogers + Architects exhibition, London, United Kingdom, London, United Kingdom

Richard Rogers + Architects exhibition opens this week at the Design Museum
One of the most influential British architects of our time, Richard Rogers has established himself and his practice at the forefront of today’s architectural culture through such high-profile projects as the Pompidou Centre, the Millennium Dome, the National Assembly for Wales and Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.

Just as his career journey launched in France and transported to the UK so too does The Richard Rogers + Architects – From the House to the City exhibition. The exhibition has been in Paris since November but comes home on Wednesday when it will open at the Design Museum.

The exhibition will present a detailed survey of Rogers’ work. This spans the early years with Norman and Wendy Foster and Su Rogers at Team 4 in the 1960s and designing the Pompidou Centre with Renzo Piano in the 1970s, to the establishment and projects of the Richard Rogers Partnership – now Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

Richard Rogers said: “The Design Museum is part of contemporary London’s cultural revolution and one of my favourite museums. I am delighted that our work will be shown there.”

The projects are arranged in colour-coded sections, with each ‘urban block’ evoking an architectural theme which examines a range of projects through new and archive models, photographs, drawings and films. In each thematic area – Transparent, Legible, Green, Lightweight, Public, Urban and Systems – projects that are particularly representative of that theme are explored.

Rogers’ early career and influences are examined in an ‘Early Work’ section, and current projects by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners are featured in a ‘Work in Progress’ section. Richard Rogers + Architects – From the House to the City, curated by Nina Due and designed by Ab Rogers Design, will appear in the museum’s first floor gallery, with additional installations in the Design Museum Tank, the cafĂ©, and the ground floor atrium space.

Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum said: “Richard Rogers has had the most remarkable career in British architecture. Beginning with an extraordinary family house in Cornwall, then changing the shape of post-war architecture with the Pompidou Centre, and now heading up an international office that is busier than ever. The Design Museum is delighted to stage this important exhibition, the first of Richard Rogers’ work in London since 1986.”
